Like Salvation, healing is another one of those topics that has me thinking how am I going to start on this. In Salvation, I talked about two deaths. One was spiritual and the other was natural. We tend to think that just because Jesus is spiritual that we only have doctors and manmade medicine to help us when our bodies take on a sickness. In this lesson on healing, I want you to know that when Jesus came to earth, He took care of us - spirit, soul, and body.
1Thessalonians 5:23 says, "And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ." So, let me explain something here about our spirit, our soul, and our body. We were made in the image of God. God is tripartate, meaning of three parts and so are we. We are spirit, soul, and body. To explain: you are a spirit. You live inside your body and you have a soul. Your soul is your mind, will, and emotions. There are many people out there that do not distinguish between the spirit and soul, but the two are not the same according to our scripture here in 1st Thessalonians. So, anytime you choose something, or your emotions are aggravated you are exercising or using your soulish realm.
When Jesus came to earth, His ministry was to take care of our wholeness being our spirit, our soul, and our body. Everything Jesus did in His earthly ministry was for you. Galatians 3:13 says, "Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:"
So, what all did Jesus go through to bring healing to us and make us whole in our spirit, our soul, and our bodies? Aside from the horrific things, Jesus suffered every emotion you and I could go through because He was rejected by so many and many folks just did not treat Him very well at all. Praise God, He stayed the course and brought redemption to us in every area of life. Jesus' final works are of two parts: 1) a whipping post and 2) the crucifixion. One was for our spiritual life - our eternal life, and the other one was for our natural life here on earth where our bodies can still take on sickness and disease.
Let's start with the spiritual part first. When Jesus died on the cross and rose again three days later and then ascended into heaven to be seated at the right hand of our Father, that secured for us the right to choose heaven or hell. Learn more about that in Salvation. If you read all of Salvation, down at the bottom you'll see a prayer you can use to let God know that you want Jesus in your heart and life, that you want Him to be your Savior.
Now, let's talk about the physical part. Many people may think that Jesus' work for our healing must be broken because our bodies still get sick and can die. While it's true that our bodies can still get sick, Jesus' work at the whipping post brought us an opportunity that will require us to believe in as well. Many of us are familiar with the phrase "download and activate." That is exactly what we have to do with all of God's promises. When we believe in Jesus' substitutionary work (he took our place in death) God's Holy Spirit comes to live inside of us and He doesn't come empty handed. The Holy Spirit comes will everything you and I will ever need to live life with godliness.
2 Peter 1:3 says, "According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:" This is a package that gets downloaded into your new born again spirit, but you will have to work with the God and the Holy Spirit to activate all the gifts in your new little basket. Healing is one of those gifts. The Holy Spirit came packed with all kinds of gifts for us to live a life in faith so we can please God. He delights in knowing that we believe in Him when He knows good and well that we cannot see or experience Him with our natural five senses. There's a lot to be said for all the many and varied gifts of the Holy Spirit, so that will go into another lesson - someday. For now, suffice to say that Jesus took care of our spiritual and natural healing.
But just exactly how did Jesus do this? You see, Jesus was tied to a post and He endured 39 lashes across His body from what is known as a cat of nine tails. He was beaten so bad that you could not recognize He was even human, Isaiah 52:14. A doctor once told me that when in medical school they learned that all sickness and diseases can be traced back to an original 39 forms. When Doc Sharp was pastoring, he would invite Dr. Jay Snell to come and minister to us. He is awesome. I'm not sure if Dr. Snell is still in ministry but click on his name to go to his YouTube channel. You'll learn much from this man. Dr. Snell taught that all of God's promises can be summed up into four basic categories: 1) salvation for you and your family 2) healing for your body 3) family well-being and 4) prosperity for your pocketbook. Dr. Snell also taught us that throughout the scriptures God gave us at least eight ways we can be physically healed. One of my favorite ways of working with God for healing is through taking communion, because, you see, the broken bread is for our healing. The bread represents Jesus' broken body. The drink (wine or more preferably, grape juice) represents the shed blood of Jesus that provided salvation for us. When you take of the bread, you are taking in the healing that Jesus' broken body afforded us. You want to take this communion quite seriously. 1st Corinthians 11:29-30 says, 29) "For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body. 30) For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep." Verse 29 says that if we partake of this communion without knowing what we are doing there is a damnation that can come upon us. When we are sick, perhaps fighting cancer or other terminal illnesses, we don't want to mess up what's going on here. The damnation is spelled out for us in verse 30. This is a three-fold damnation. Verse 30 says, for this cause (not understanding - making you worthy to partake of it) many are 1) weak, 2) sickly, and 3) sleep. This word for sleep means death or to die. In other words, it's speaking of those that die.
So, yes, Jesus, did a lot for us in His earthly ministry and the top two was to take care of our sin (sinful nature) and bringing us healing for us, spirit, soul, and body. If you want more information on the eight ways to be healed as noted by Dr. Jay Snell, please contact me.
It takes a lot to begin to understand the things of God so don't delay on this. It's super important because you have an enemy out there that you cannot see, but you witness his destruction every day.
John 10:10 says, "The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly." Becoming a Christian will not stop satan from attacking you but it gives you the edge to fight and win.
2nd Corinthians 2:14 says, "Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place." You only get this victory if you belong to Jesus. Learn more about this here.
